Do what you gotta do to get us out of here.
That comes from an unidentified Marine (in Afghanistan) that was just interviewed on NPR. It made me stop and think how important it is to get Obama in the White House and a solid majority in the House and Senate. Not just to us, but to the thousands of soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The soldiers interviewed were stationed in Afghanistan and feel detached from the presidential election:
"It really is almost irrelevant, too," he says. "When we get here, you know, you know that war, all it is is old men talking and young men dying. That's all we see. So, it calms down politics a lot of when you're out here."Like many of the Marines in Garmsir, Cpl. Cody Bazanech was in eighth grade when the Sept. 11 terror attacks took place.
Another Marine talked about their unit probably being sent to Iraq next year and about the occupation in Iraq:
I don't want to see us...my kids here, doing the same thing I was doing.
The first Marine I mentioned asked what the people back home were doing to help the soldiers:
What are people back home, civilians, citizens of America, what are you guys doing?
Why don't you guys do what you gotta do to get us out of here?
I just wanted to remind people that this election isn't all about us and about what we want. Most of us already know that Obama will disappoint us sometime in the future, even make some of us angry, but losing this election to McCain is simply not an option.
Not for us and not for those Marines in Afghanistan.
